Colorado law allows renewal applicants to take a shorter refresher instead of repeating the full course. This is that class.

If you are applying for the first time, you need the 8-hour class instead. If your permit is current and you are renewing, this is the one.
What the refresher covers
Colorado requires that a refresher class include instruction on changes to firearms law — and there have been several. That is the core of this class, not an afterthought.
- What has changed in Colorado firearms law since you last certified — including HB24-1174 and SB25-003
- Use of force, and where you may and may not carry
- What actually happens after a defensive incident
- Safe storage — at home, in the vehicle, and around children
- A live-fire qualification
- The written exam
It is two hours, so we do not waste them. You already know how to shoot. This is about what has changed and proving you still meet the standard.
Timing — do not leave it too late
Your training certificate has a limited shelf life, so take the refresher close to your renewal rather than well ahead of it. Most people aim for the few months before their permit expires.
Not sure where you stand? Call us with your expiration date and we will tell you when to book. Your county sheriff’s office is the final word on renewal timing and paperwork.
Why the instructor matters
A refresher certificate is only valid if the instructor is verified by a county sheriff. Not every instructor is.

Questions
Can I just take the 8-hour class instead?
Yes, and some people prefer to. If it has been a long time since you trained, the full course is not a bad idea. We will tell you honestly which one fits.
Is there live fire?
Yes. The law requires a live-fire qualification for renewals as well as new applicants.
Can I do this online?
No. The refresher must be in person, taught by a verified instructor.
My permit already expired.
Talk to your county sheriff first — an expired permit may mean starting over with the 8-hour class. Call us and we will point you the right way.
Do you teach outside Douglas County?
Yes. Verification is valid statewide, and students come from across the Denver metro.
